Each year, the Canadian Bar Association Nova Scotia Branch recognizes our members, and community organizations, for their service to the legal profession and the promotion of equity and access to justice. During our 2022 Annual Conference held on December 1st and 2nd, we were pleased to present three awards to deserving recipients.
Established in 2001, the Community Service Award honours, recognizes and celebrates the valuable contribution a member has made to community and/or charitable causes at a local, provincial or federal level. The 2022 Community Service Award was awarded to Lola Williams-Afolabi (née Agbaje-Williams). Lola is currently an associate at BOYNECLARKE LLP in Dartmouth, practicing primarily business and intellectual property law. Lola is an active member of the CBA's National Law Student Section and Equity Liaison Committee, and mentors NCA students as well as volunteering with several other organizations in various capacities including Community Liaison at the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers ("CABL") (NS), and Director at Global Lawyers of Canada (“GLC”) (Atlantic region).
Lola actively participates in multiple community and non-profit organizations. Her community impact and involvement, as well as her exemplary performance in several volunteer roles and activities over the years, have served to advocate and benefit NCA students, internationally trained lawyers and members of the community.
This year’s deserving recipient of the President's Distinguished Service Award is Doug Lloy, K.C., Managing Lawyer at Nova Scotia Legal Aid. Established in 1996, the President's Distinguished Service Award honours, recognizes and celebrates distinguished or exceptional service that a member has made to the Nova Scotia Branch. Doug has been a CBA Law Day Committee member and a regional representative for northern Nova Scotia for CBA NS for many years. In addition, Doug was active as a Section Chair and then Chair for the Criminal Law Section for two consecutive terms. In addition, Doug has been a valuable member of the CBA Professional Development Committee for the past five years.
Aside from his involvement with CBA over the years, Doug is a long-standing member of the Pictou County’s Barristers’ Society and their longest serving President. Doug has also been a pro bono consulting advisor for the Canada Pension Plan for almost 20 years, and has fielded disability inquiries from lawyers across Canada, and has practiced for the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Society, supporting access to justice throughout his career.
At the 2022 Annual Conference, the Zöe Odei Young Lawyers' Award of the CBA NS Branch was awarded to Andrea MacNevin. Andrea joined Barteaux Labour and Employment Lawyers Inc. in March of 2022 and focuses on workplace investigations. Established in 2003, this award is in memory of the late Zöe Odei of Halifax, an active CBA member who exemplified the distinguished and exceptional service contemplated by this Award. The award honours and recognizes a young lawyer’s distinguished or exceptional service to the Association, the community or charitable causes.
Andrea was integral in the creation of the ADR section for CBA Nova Scotia, and previously the Vice-Chair and Secretary for the Civil Litigation and ADR CBA section, respectively. She currently volunteers with Dalhousie Pro Bono, and Seventh Step. Andrea has also been a restorative justice facilitator with the Community Justice Society and worked with Fredericton Legal Advice.
The CBA Nova Scotia Branch wishes to congratulate all of this year’s award recipients and commend them on their individual qualifications, exemplary community efforts, and continued involvement with CBA.
