This annual award recognizes and celebrates outstanding contributions to improving access to justice for Nova Scotians who face social, economic and systemic barriers.
Eligibility
Individuals and organizations all across the province’s justice sector, including:
- Individuals: lawyers, law students, judges, law professors.
- Law-related organizations: legal clinics, law firms, legal departments, legal services providers.
- Non-legal organizations: schools, colleges, universities, community committees/groups.
- Advocacy organizations and special interest groups active in the legal and justice system.
Criteria
The committee will assess the nominations on the following criteria:
- Supports and facilitates ongoing collaboration and coordination, to enable those who are committed to equal justice to work together more effectively.
- Provides pro bono legal services or reduced cost services.
- Advocates for legislation and policies that will reduce constraints (costs, delays, complexity, etc.) for litigants.
- Develops and/or applies new technologies and tools to improve the efficiency of our justice system.
- Develops frameworks or models that take into account the public’s experiences with and perceptions of justice.
- Empowers the public with knowledge about the courts, law enforcement agencies, the justice system and the legal profession.
- Provides a service that may not involve strict legal services but include community service that enhances the justice system.
Nomination Procedure
Nominations must contain an explanation of how the nominee has made an outstanding contribution to improving access to justice for Nova Scotians who face social and economic barriers, providing examples of how the nominee has met the nomination criteria (max 2,000 characters).
Nominations must also be supported by a letter or email endorsing the nominee (provided by a person or organisation other than the nominator). Additional supporting information (e.g. copies of media mentions, advocacy work, publications, education, pro-bono contributions, special initiatives, etc.) may also be provided.
Nominations must include confirmation that the nominee is aware of the nomination and will attend the award presentation.

Selection Process
The Award is administered by the Nominations Committee, a standing Committee of the Nova Scotia Branch. The Committee may determine that no Award shall be granted in any one year.
Presentation
The Award is presented annually at the AGM or other CBA-NS event.
